Most are in the area of academic education and scholarship but one film has won a substantial amount as well. The recipient is a documentary that examines the influence of American rock n roll on the Soviet Union’s collapse. The film, to be directed by Jim Brown, received a development award of $550,000. The film will detail how the music, initially banned by the Kremlin, became so popular that it fueled resentment toward the authorities and contributed to the creation of a rebellious youth movement.
