When the Tribeca Film Festival began 10 years ago, it hosted a competition for New York based films. These days, those films are integrated into the overall program, but there is definitely a strong emphasis on films that take place in the Big Apple. This year, among the films with that New York state of mind are 2 DAYS IN NEW YORK, actress/director Julie Delpy’s witty comedy that pairs her with Chris Rock and their young kids from prior relationships; BABYGIRL, an intense family drama about a Bronx teenager who watches her mother squander her life on a series of deadbeat men; FIRST WINTER, a stunning debut feature about a group of Brooklyn hipsters in a remote country farmhouse; JACK AND DIANE, a lesbian love story that takes place over the hottest summer in New York history; STONES IN THE SUN, set in New York’s Haitian community; and SUPPORTING CHARACTERS, a funny take on modern relationships among New York’s ambitious twenty-something set.
