Nielsen has reported that a scant 23 million Americans tuned in to watch Prince William marry his princess Kate Middleton on Friday morning. Considering that the live telecast was viewed globally by over 2.5 billion viewers around the world, this makes the American figure quite anemic. That means that the American television audience accounted for less than 1 per cent of the overall figure. The main reason is most probably the time difference, with proceedings beginning at 4am New York time and 1am Los Angeles time. There may also have been viewer burnout over the several weeks leading up to the event, or the understanding that the 24 hour news channels on cable would provide the event highlights during the regular primetime.
