10th TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FILM SELECTIONS FOR SPOTLIGHT AND CINEMANIA SECTIONS AND SPECIAL SCREENINGS

10th TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FILM SELECTIONS

FOR SPOTLIGHT AND CINEMANIA SECTIONS AND SPECIAL SCREENINGS

New York, NY – The  Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), presented by American Express, today announced its feature film selections in the Spotlight and Cinemania sections, as well as Special Screenings and the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival lineup. The 10th edition of the Festival will take place from April 20 to May 1 in lower Manhattan.

“Now that the majority of the program has been announced I believe you will see the rich variety and quality of the films and talent that we are presenting at Tribeca this year,” said David Kwok, Director of Programming. “The program is about both discovery and showcasing a broad range of filmmaking to our eclectic and diverse audiences who are passionate about film.”

“This year’s Spotlight is a mixture of carefully selected festival favorites from around the globe, highly anticipated  releases,  a number of  new works by high profile filmmakers and films with subjects of special note,” said Genna Terranova, Senior Programmer. “And in Cinemania we really kick it up a notch with boundary-pushing genre films packed with action, sexy thrills, and an extra helping of blood and guts for good measure.”

The Spotlight section is comprised of 33 films that highlight the works of a wide array of both established and rising talent as well as recognizable subjects. This exciting mix of current global cinema consists of 16 documentaries and 17 narratives, 16 of which will world premiere at the Festival. The Cinemania section offers an eclectic assortment of eight narrative films that defy categorization from all around the world.

The fifth annual Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival, which takes place during TFF, will feature the world premiere of Oscar®-winning director Alex Gibney’s Catching Hell as its centerpiece Gala. The film explores the relationship between Chicago Cubs fans and Steve Bartman following his infamous near-catch of a foul ball in Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship Series.

“Five years ago Tribeca and ESPN started the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival with a modest goal: We wanted to shine a light on sports stories and broaden the audience for independent film,” said Nancy Schafer, Tribeca Film Festival Executive Director. “It has become one of the signature programs of the Tribeca Film Festival, and I know that the audience will be thrilled with this year’s films, just as I was.”

SPOTLIGHT

Co-Sponsored by JetBlue Airways

A panorama of international and American cinema, this year’s Spotlight slate showcases notable performances from talents including Orlando Bloom in the psychological thriller The Good Doctor, Chris Evans in the legal drama Puncture, an against-type Kathleen Turner in the family dramedy The Perfect Family, Italian superstar Toni Servillo in the thriller A Quiet Life, and dueling wits Chow Yun-Fat and Jiang Wen in the Chinese hit Let the Bullets Fly. Performance itself takes center stage in the section’s many documentaries on renowned musicians and artists, including profiles of such disparate figures as Carol Channing, Ozzy Osbourne, and Yves Saint Laurent. Among these luminaries, performers such as Miriam Makeba, A Tribe Called Quest, and the legendary Haitian band Septentrional use their song to inspire generations of people. Social justice continues to emerge as a larger theme in the section, from The Loving Story’s historical revisiting of marriage equality through one couple’s fight against anti-miscegenation laws, to the development of environmentally sustainable and economically accessible automobiles in Revenge of the Electric Car, as well as the motivations behind Caribbean cricketers’ determination for a defiant victory in Fire In Babylon. This selection of 33 highly anticipated new releases and festival favorites will provoke discussion and be sure to entertain.

CINEMANIA

The fun, playful slate of this year’s Cinemania program represents a well-rounded spectrum of contemporary genre filmmaking, including science fiction, horror, exploitation, and fantasy. Each of these films challenges the expectations and definitions of their respective genres—from Beyond the Black Rainbow’s immersive, futuristically retro sci-fi experience, to an adorable and sexy Japanese “pink” musical in Underwater Love. Always a Cinemania staple, this year’s selection of horror films are also united in a common impulse to tackle genre conventions from inspired new angles, including a clever and revitalizing take on the teens-lost-in-the-woods premise in Rabies, a Dutch Christmas-themed slasher in Saint, and two fresh spins on the very contemporary “found footage” horror movement, between spooky ghost story Grave Encounters and Norwegian monster flick sensation TROLLHUNTER.  Expect the unexpected with these smart and thrilling crowd-pleasers.
