Counting Down To New York Film Festival 50th Anniversary

Written by: FFT Webmaster | January 9th, 2012

While its official 50th anniversary will not happen until next October, the New York Film Festival will be presenting intermittent programs over the next 9 months of some of the films that it helped launch and the filmmakers it championed. Beginning this month, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which sponsors the yearly Festival and other programs throughout the year, will entice New York audiences with films by some of the great film masters whose works first reached American shores via the Festival. Among the film classics on tap in the coming weeks: ALI: FEARS EATS THE SOUL (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Germany, 1974), THE ENIGMA OF KASPAR HAUSER (Werner Herzog, Germany, 1975), KINGS OF THE ROAD (Wim Wenders, Germany, 1976), HANDLE WITH CARE (Jonathan Demme, USA, 1977), GATES OF HEAVEN (Errol Morris, USA, 1978), THE BLACK STALLION (Carroll Ballard, USA, 1979), MELVIN AND HOWARD (Jonathan Demme, USA, 1980), THE LAST METRO (François Truffaut, France, 1980) and MAN OF IRON (Andrzej Wajda, Poland, 1980).
