The 8th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival DOCVILLE in Belgium has come to an end after presenting over 120 screenings and events, industry meetings and numerous Q&A’s with directors from Belgium and abroad. The winners of the 2012 edition were announced during at the closing gala awards ceremony. The CANVAS Jury Award for Best International Documentary went to the Italian film IL CASTELLO (Massimo D’Anolfi & Martina Parenti). This visually stunning film previously won awards at Hot Docs (Toronto) and the IDA International Awards (USA). The ConScience Award for Best Documentary was given to the controversial Danish documentary THE AMBASSADOR (Mads Brügger). In his film, the director finds an unconventional way to demonstrate the corruption and the moral bankruptcy of the Central-African region by dressing up as a neo-colonial and posing as a diplomat. The film was the opening night feature at the IDFA festival in Amsterdam last November. The SCAM Award for Best Belgian Documentary was awarded to Bram Van Paesschen for his film EMPIRE OF DUST, an eye-opening and at times hilarious film about the human side of the Chinese invasion of Africa to get access to its mineral deposits.
