Los Angeles Film Festival Winners

The Los Angeles Film Festival, which concluded this past weekend, held its gala Awards Brunch at chic restaurant Chaya, with actors Allison Janney and John C. Reilly on hand to present the awards. The Narrative Competition Award, which includes a $15,000 cash prize, was won by Montreal-based writer/director Stéphane Lafleur for FAMILIAR GROUND, the tale of a brother and sister who may have encountered an alien from another world, which made its North American Premiere at the event. Winning the DocumentaryCompetition Award, which also offers a $15,000 cash prize, was WISH ME AWAY (Beverly Kopf and Bobbie Birleffi), a portrait of a country singer who comes out as lesbian, that had its world premiere at the Festival. Other major awards included a prize to the ensemble cast of HOW TO CHEAT for Best Performance; the Narrative Audience Award to ATTACK THE BLOCK, directed by Joe Cornish; and the Documentary Audience Award to director Michael Rappaport for BEATS,, RHYMES AND LIFE.
