In Memoriam: Morgan Spurlock

Written by: Jeremy Taylor | May 27th, 2024

When I heard about the passing of documentarian Morgan Spurlock* (Super Size Me), the first thing that came to mind was that here’s another example of the good dying young. I first met Morgan at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. He was very approachable. I found him to be a cool, down-to-earth guy, and when we talked about my documentary Burma: An Indictment and what our 501c3 nonprofit does (we provided humanitarian relief to orphaned Burmese refugee children), Morgan asked how he could help. I asked if he’d host our Burma fundraiser at the Friars’ Club in New York City. He accepted and it was an excellent event.

Morgan and I also met at his office in lower Manhattan where he then presented me with a $5,000 check as a donation to help build a dormitory for young Burmese orphaned girls in Maesot, Thailand, on the Thai/Burma border. When I first got to Maesot, I went to the New Blood School and when I arrived at 7am I saw young girls lying on mats outside in the dirt. I said to the schools’ headmaster, “Great! You have them doing yoga.” He looked at me and said, “Yoga? This is where they sleep.” Not anymore, thanks to Morgan Spurlock‘s contribution. RIP, brother.
