Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen will receive the European Achievement In World Cinema Award at next month’s European Film Awards, in recognition of his unique contribution to European cinema. Beginning his acting career in his native Denmark, he made a strong impression with his debut in director Nicolas Winding Refn’s crime films PUSHER (1996) and PUSHER II (2000). He solidified his acting chops in two films by Anders Thomas Jensen, THE GREEN BUTCHERS (2003) and ADAM’S APPLES (2005). For Oscar winning director Susanne Bier, he starred in the films OPEN HEARTS (2002) and AFTER THE WEDDING (2006), for which he was nominated for both an European Film Award and the Robert Award for his acting. When he starred opposite Daniel Craig as the villainous “Le Chiffre” in the James Bond actioner CASINO ROYALE (2006), he became an international sensation, devastatingly attractive and yet deadly. He has continued to excel in a broad range of roles, including the resistance fighter in Ole Christian Madsen’s FLAME AND CITRON (2008) and as Igor Stravinsky in COCO CHANEL & IGOR STARVINSKY (2009) by Dutch director Jan Kounen. He is next starring in the Franco-German co-production MICHAEL KOHLHAAS, a period epic written and directed by Arnaud des Pallières. The 24th European Film Awards will be held in Berlin on December 3rd.
