Montreal To Honor Victor Loewy

Written by: FFT Webmaster | August 19th, 2011

The Montreal World Film Festival will pay tribute to veteran Canadian producer and distributor Victor Loewy at the screening of his latest film THE ARTIST, a hit at the Cannes Film Festival. Loewy began his career in the early 1970s when he founded Vivafilm in Montreal with fellow McGill student Robert Lantos. The two eventually founded Alliance, the premier Canadian theatrical distributor which also is a major player in other markets such as Britain and Spain. Originally born in Romania, Loewy came to Montreal in 1964 and created a base in the city’s dynamic cinema culture. Among the films that his various companies have distributed in Canada over the years are such important milestones as MONTENEGRO (1981), THE SECRET POLICEMAN’S OTHER BALL (1982), MY LIFE AS A DOG (1985), CINEMA PARADISO (1988), PULP FICTION (1994) and LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (1997), THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS (2003) and the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Under Loewy, Alliance became Canada’s top independent distributor of Canadian and foreign films, including his most recent hit, the Oscar winner THE KING’S SPEECH.
