JIFF proudly announces its line-ups of JIFF2011 MASTERCLASS

“Unforgettable meetings with 3 legendary masters!”

Director Claire DENIS | Cinematographer KIM Woo-hyoung | Film Critic Noël BURCH

The 12th Jeonju International Film Festival (Festival Director MIN Byung-lock) proudly announces its line-ups for this year’s JIFF Masterclass, which is to be held from May 1(Sun) to 3(Tue): director Claire DENIS, cinematographer KIM Woo-hyoung and film critic Noël BURCH will be participating in JIFF2011 Masterclass.

What is Masterclass?

Launched in 2003, JIFF Masterclass is a special seminar programme combined lecture with discussion, representing “JIFF Class” which is a core programme of JIFF. JIFF Masterclass invites experts in the field to share their experiences and thoughts with the audience. Beyond the mere lecture-base other master classes, JIFF Masterclass has been featured with the active participation of the audience and heated discussion. In 2010, BONG Joon-ho and Pedro COSTA were invited to JIFF2010 Directors’ Masterclass and shared their cinematic world with the audience.

JIFF Masterclass has focused on a specific field each year such as directors in 2003 and 2010, cinematographers in 2004, music directors in 2005, actors in 2006, production designers in 2007, screenwriters in 2008 and film critics in 2009. This year, JIFF2011 Masterclass comes to invite an expert from 3 different fields in order to make this programme more colourful.

3 Legendary Masters Coming to JIFF: Claire DENIS, KIM Woo-hyoung and Noël BURCH

As a participant of Directors’ Masterclass and one of the directors of Jeonju Digital Project 2011, Claire DENIS has been examined the matter of colonialism thoughts being internalised in Europeans’ daily lives with a delicate and intuitive contemplation since her debut in 1988. Especially, her recent films such as The Intruder (2004) and White Material (2009) have won critical acclaims with a drastic and innovative style of aesthetic.

As a participant of Cinematographers’ Masterclass, cinematographer KIM Woo-hyoung is well known for his participation in a recently released film Late Autumn (2010) by director KIM Tae-yong. KIM has worked with a number of talented Korean directors such as JANG Sun-woo, IM Sang-soo and PARK Chan-ok and has been recognised as one of the best Korean cinematographers for being able to fully understand the directors’ intention with imprinting his own style on screen. Late Autumn (2010) will be screened at JIFF2011 as a part of his Masterclass programme.

Last but not least, this year’s participant for Critics’ Masterclass is Noël BURCH who is a world famous film critic with his provocative and argumentative writings on radical cinema through the books such as 『To the Distant Observer』 and 『Theory of Film Practice』. As a director, BURCH won the Special Orizzonti Jury Prize at 2010 Venice Film Festival with his new essay film, The Forgotten Space (2010). Along with the screening of The Forgotten Space (2010) at his Masterclass, BURCH will give a lecture about the origin and the structure of essay cinema.

This year’s JIFF Masterclass will be providing a rare opportunity of meeting legendary masters and sharing their precious experiences and thoughts with cinephiles and students who dream of a future master.
