Film Review: “Captain Marvel”

Captain Marvel (Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck, 2019) 2 out of 4 stars.
Writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson) bring back the mid-199os with comments ranging about everything from computers to music in this 21st latest iteration from the 18-billion-dollar Marvel Cinematic Universe. The big breakthrough in this film is that it is the first to be led by a female superhero, without help from a guy. The actress selected as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers is Academy Award-winning, 29-year-old Brie Larson (Room). She is wonderful!
As Carol Danvers, Larson portrays an Air Force pilot with intergalactic powers. With assistance from a young Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and an orange cat named Goose, she saves the Earth. This is no easy battle, as fighting he shape-shifting creatures known as Skrulls is a near impossibility.
The battles rage in CGI as only befits a Marvel property. While story is not its strong suit, it’s impossible to forget the cine-magic imagery. It will surely hold over fans until the next film, Avengers: Endgame.
