TIFF Midnight Madness Attracts Distributor Heat

The Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival is exclusively devoted to action, sci-fi and horror genre films from every corner of the globe. While the section has always been an audience favorite for those who appreciate their gore, it has also become a key destination for acquisition executives looking to find the next BLAIR WITCH PROJECT or PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (indie films on micro-budgets that cleaned up at the international box office). This year’s program includes 10 titles. Among the most buzzed about are SLEEPLESS NIGHT (Frederic Jardin), about a cop who must wander through a corrupt underground to save his kidnapped son; KILL LIST (Ben Wheatley), a supernatural mystery about a professional killer who becomes a pawn when he accepts an assignment from some shadowy clients; THE INCIDENT (Alexandre Courtes), a maniacs on the loose melodrama set in an atmospheric high security mental institution; THE DAY (Doug Aarniokoski), the spooky tale of a band of survivors who must fight to keep humanity alive in a bleak post-apocalyptic world; and LOVELY MOLLY (Eduardo Sanchez); a supernatural nightmare of the unknown that envelopes a young newlywed. With genre films making significant coin around the world, buyers are pouncing on these films with an almost zombie-like fervor.
