A quiet and meditative documentary from Korea, PLANET OF SNAIL by director Seungiun Yi, is wowing audiences at Silverdocs. The film achieves a kind of ethereal poetry of conscious awareness as it depicts the special relationship between the blind/deaf poet Seungiun Yi and his devoted wife who serves as his guide in the sighted world. Through visually striking imagery and intimate detail, we see what it takes to forge a life of creative productivity without the ability to see or hear. The poet insists that his limitations in one area only heightens his awareness in others, and this contemplative perspectives offers audiences not only a personalized view of what some may dub a “disability” but also an alarmingly intimate sensation of the powers of the mind and the longing of the spirit.
