Groundbreaking Festival Unites Fans of Grindhouse Cinema, Psychotronic Kitsch and Japanese Pink Films At The New Beverly Cinema September 24-26
Los Angeles, CA September 8, 2010 – Devoted to the cinema of the weird, outrageous and anything but the norm, the Boobs and Blood International Film Festival brings together fans of grindhouse cinema, lesbian vampire flicks and Japanese pink films for a weekend of kitsch-awesomeness at the world famous New Beverly Cinema. Festival President Miles Flanagan, himself a lifelong fan of psychotronica, describes Boobs and Blood as “a celebration of the past and showcase of the future.” The festival presents films from the ‘70s that hooked fans like Quentin Tarantino on movies, as well as world premieres of the latest of these insane productions. From September 24th to the 26th, come to the New Beverly Cinema and participate in the most outrageous weekend of boob-filled films and parties ever assembled.
The festival will kick off on Friday, September 24th with a rare screening of the unrated version of “Suicide Girls Must Die.” Suicide Girls will be there in person and the film will be presented for the first time in Beyond 3D-O-Vision! Saturday and Sunday, mix it up between grindhouse and pink, with a screening of the only remaining 35mm print of the ‘80s classic “Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers,” presented by star Michelle Bauer and the director Fred Olen Ray, and a pink double feature of “The Japanese Wife Next Door” and “The Japanese Wife Next Door 2,” two pink classics by the legendary Yutaka Ikegima, who has directed so many pink films he has earned the title “Mr. Pink.”
Directors found that pink films were great opportunities to experiment with style and subject, since the only two requirements of a pink film are that it be one hour long and show a certain number of sex scenes. With this freedom came wild experimentation and outrageous subject matter, which is why you’ll be hard-pressed to find a title of a pink film that doesn’t sound something like “Inflatable Sex Doll of The Wastelands” or “A Lonely Cow Weeps at Midnight.” The pink vampire film “Twilight Dinner” will screen on Sunday as part of the festival’s Lesbian Vampire Day, and the film’s curvy star Reiko Yamaguchi and director Yutaka Ikegima – Mr. Pink himself – will be present at this first-ever screening of the award-winning film outside of Japan.
Other films to be screened include “S&M Hunter” and “Pervert: The Movie.”
Before each screening guests will be entertained by a fast-paced Rat Pack-style burlesque show, complete with house band The Cinnamon Sextet, as well as short films, surprise guests, contests, and dancers. This melange of mind candy will be hosted by comedians Eric Acosta, Brady Novak and Chris Fairbanks.
The outrageousness doesn’t stop there. Also premiering at Boobs and Blood is Pornioke, a website where users can become virtual ‘70s porn stars. And there are giveaways, Q&A sessions, S&M girls, and rumor has it the Boobs and Blood Girl of the Month will be there too. A catered mix-and-mingle party for fans and professionals alike will follow every screening, so bring your resumé, screenplay, or autograph book!
A special thrill awaits die-hard fans as well as newcomers: ‘70s actress and Playboy Playmate Anulka Dziubinska will be attending the festival weekend.
Star of the acclaimed 1975 lesbian vampire classic “Vampyres,” Anulka makes a very rare appearance and will be on hand to talk about the film and her career.
And to complete the event, the First Annual Boobs and Blood Festival Awards will honor film accomplishments in the categories of Lifetime Achievement, Psychotronic Newcomer, Psychotronic Humanitarian of the year, International LIfetime Achievement, and Best of the Fest, a category which will be determined by audience voting. The sculptor Spencer Davis, who created the Barbie-defying “Booty Babe” plastic figure series, designed the voluptuous trophy that the honored winners will receive.
“I put this together first and foremost because I’m a fan,” explains Miles Flanagan. “I know that everyone involved in Boobs and Blood is as passionate about these movies as anyone attending, and we’re going to make this exactly the kind of weekend these movie lovers want. A good pink psychotronic grindhouse time will be had by all.” A man of many passions – he is a composer, screenwriter, film director, and owner of Parallax Studioworks, Inc, – Miles says this is the first time he has brought all of his passions together. A longtime patron of the New Beverly Cinema, Miles knew that the venue was the perfect place – the only place – for this event. Says Miles, “The New Beverly has always been a home for this kind of community of fans and filmmakers, and now that Quentin Tarantino himself is the venue’s owner, this place will forever be L.A.’s great hub for the offbeat.”
