Aki Kaurismäki, the best known film director from Finland with an international cult following, will receive his first major retrospective in the Czech Republic this week at the Summer Film School from July 22 to 31. The retrospective includes almost the whole cinematic œuvre of the director, including his short films that are rarely seen. Kaurismäki himself will present the retrospective at the Summer Film School, the largest non-competition film event in the Czech Republic. The program includes not only film screenings but a wide range of lectures, master classes of noted film figures, seminars and panel discussions. The Finnish director’s latest film LE HAVRE, a meditation on cross-culturalism in the new Europe that has even more potency in light of the tragic events this past weekend in Norway, will also be screened. The film won the FRIPESCI International Critics Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being celebrated as the director’s finest film in a decade.
