BAM Celebrates Indie Distributor Magnolia Pictures

Written by: FFT Webmaster | August 8th, 2011

Independent distribution is facing its most challenging period ever but the commitment of companies in the space is certainly worthy of praise and support. That is the raison d’etre behind 10 Years of Magnolia Pictures, a tribute to the feisty distributor’s tenacity and commitment, that will be presented at the BamCinematek from August 24 to 31. From among the dozens of films that the distributor has championed in the past decade, 13 films have been chosen, providing a snapshot of the provocative and intelligent independent and international cinema that the pioneering company has brought to screens.  The series begins with the Hitchcockian thriller READ MY LIPS by French director Jacques Audiard, the company’s first substantial hit Other films to be featured in the series include Steven Soderbergh’s experimental drama THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE (2009), the Thai martial arts epic ONG-BAK (2003), the Best Documentary Oscar winner MAN ON WIRE (2008), the Swedish vampire love story LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2009) and the lush Italian melodrama I AM LOVE (2010).
