Documentary On Painter Gerhard Richter

Written by: FFT Webmaster | March 14th, 2012

A portrait of who many consider the world’s most inspired contemporary artist will make its U.S. theatrical premiere at the Film Forum later this week. GERHARD RICHTER PAINTING, a sensational new documentary by German director Corinna Belz, offers an intimate view of the painter at work, as he reminisces about his career and the things he embraces and rejects in the contemporary art world. The film traces his personal history, born in Dresden in 1932, living his early adult life in East Germany, and migrating to West Germany in the 1960s as part of a newly revived German art movement. Belz had previously shot a short film in 2007 documenting the creation of Richter’s stained glass window for the legendary Cologne Cathedral. This sparked her interest in creating a feature length documentary on his life and work. The film had its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2011 and has since had American rights picked up by Kino Lorber Films, a New York-based specialty distributor of quality independent and international films. The documentary will play at the Film Forum from March 14 to 27, before a national rollout. For more information, visit: http://www.kinolorber.com/film.php?id=1250
