Indies Doing Well At Theatrical Box Office

Written by: FFT Webmaster | November 21st, 2011

The weekend box office was kind to director Alexander Payne’s THE DESCENDANTS. Even though distributor Fox Searchlight film opened the George Clooney-starrer in a limited release of 29 locations, it still scored a remarkable $1.5 Million, making into the top ten slot for the past weekend. Interestingly, THE DESCENDANTS beat out PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3, which is screening over 1400 theaters nationwide, and the remake of FOOTLOOSE, which is in over 1200 theaters. Among holdovers, Fox Searchlight’s MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE dropped slightly from 183 locations to 180, but has cracked the critical $2 million mark. Another solid performer is MELANCHOLIA, the Lars von Trier film being released by Magnolia Pictures. The film went wide from 19 to 56 screens in its second week, already hitting the half million dollar mark. The other indie performer of the season is LIKE CRAZY, being distributed by Paramount Vantage. In its fourth weekend, the film has grossed a total of nearly $2 million as it continues to expand its reach beyond the major markets into suburban multiplexes.
