Montreal Film Market Activities

Written by: FFT Webmaster | August 25th, 2011

Parallel to the Montreal Film Festival is the Montreal Film Market, where film producers, distributors and financiers are able to network in a relaxed, intimate setting at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the Festival’s main hq. The Market has sponsored several information conferences this week, including ones looking at the impact of new media and new distribution platforms on traditional distribution, and also one focused on the creation and marketing of music for movies. On Wednesday, the Market sponsored The Next Frontier:  Independent Film and the Arrival of Non-Traditional, Alternative Distribution, an informative look on new distribution models and platforms. The lively discussion was led by moderator Christian Gaines, head of Festival Strategy and Business Development for IMDB, and included panelists Mynette Louie (producer, Syncopated Films),  Orly Ravid (distributor, The Film Collaborative) and Ira Deutchman (exhibitor/distributor, Emerging Pictures).

The Videotheque provides buyers and programmers with the chance to view DVD copies of the more than 400 feature length and short films being shown here this week.  A new initiative, the Production Exchange provides attending producers and directors to meet with other producers, financiers, distributors, sales agents, government agencies and broadcasters to complete financing and distribution of their current projects and to lay the groundwork for new international co-productions. Information on selected projects is published in a Project Book that is circulated to industry professionals. Production Exchange will arrange meetings between interested parties.
