New York Film Festival Announces Twin Galas

Written by: FFT Webmaster | August 26th, 2011

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced the first-time addition of two Galas to join the Opening, Centerpiece and Closing Night Galas for the upcoming 49th New York Film Festival (September 30 – October 16). The films honored include A DANGEROUS METHOD, the newest film from Canadian auteur David Cronenberg and THE SKIN I LIVE IN, the latest melodrama from international favorite Pedro Almodovar. This is the first time that a Cronenberg film will play the Festival. Almodovar has been a festival regular since his breakthrough films of the late 1970s. A DANGEROUS METHOD chronicles the thorny relationship between two of psychiatry’s most famous practitioners Sigmund Freud (played by Cronenberg regular Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (played by Michael Fassbender) as they compete for the treatment of a troubled young woman, played by Keira Knightley. THE SKIN I LIVE IN reunites its director with one of his breakout stars, Antonio Banderas, in a gothic thriller about a world famous plastic surgeon whose medical experiments have imprisoned a young woman in his mansion while the good doctor subjects her to an increasingly bizarre regime of treatments. Both films will be released by Sony Pictures Classics later this year and look to be contenders in the awards season.
