Silverdocs Award Winners

Written by: FFT Webmaster | June 29th, 2011

Also concluding this past weekend was the AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Festival, which presented a strong lineup of non-fiction films from around the globe. The Sterling Award for Best US Feature, which includes a $5000 cash prize, was won by OUR SCHOOL, an insightful look at the efforts to integrated rural Gypsies into the mainstream school system of Romania, co-directed by Mona Nicoara and Miruna Coco-Cozma. The Sterling Award for Best World Feature, also a $5000 cash prize, went to FAMILY INSTINCT, a look at a dysfunctional (and possibly incestuous) Latvian family, directed by Andris Gauja. The Sterling Award for Best Short Film was given to GUANAPE SUR, an Italian/German co-production by director János Richter that examines the harvesting rituals of thousands of sea birds on a barren island off the coast of Peru.  Winning the Audience Awards was DONOR UNKOWN, directed by Jerry Rothwell, about a woman who tries to connect with her anonymous sperm-donor father (a non-fiction version of last year’s indie hit THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT).
