With China, the world’s most populous nation, going through unprecedented upheavals that are changing its scope and position in the world, a new documentary series at New York’s Asia Society offers an insider look at the pulse of the nation. Dubbed Visions Of A New China, the series, which runs through the end of October, is presenting nine films that examine the new China from a number of intriguing points of views, including governmental reform, architecture, child rearing, dining and corporate intrigue. Among the highlights are WHEN MY CHILD IS BORN, a look at a young educated couple dealing with an unexpected pregnancy in a country where one child per family is still the official rule; and ONCE UPON A TIME PROLETARIAN, which features several vignettes covering a diverse group of individuals who are trying to find their place in a newly energized China.
