One of the great iconoclasts of American independent cinema left us May 29th. His first significant acting role was in Rebel Without A Cause(1955) and he was traumatized by James Dean’s sudden death in 1955. His role as director of the countercultural classic Easy Rider(1969)sealed his legendary status as a cool maverick. His performance in David Lynch’s masterpiece Blue Velvet(1986) will always be revered as one of the best ever. He was married five times, had children and amassed one of the world’s greatest collections of modern art. He also served for many years as “artistic director” of the now defunct “Cinevegas Film Festival”. We will miss him.
