NANTUCKET FILM FESTIVAL
& SCREENPLAY COMPETITION
Nantucket, Massachusetts – USA
June 22 to 26, 2011
In the Spotlight this week is the 16th Annual NANTUCKET FILM FESTIVAL & SCREENPLAY COMPETITION (NFF). Well-established, respected, and eagerly anticipated each year by a fast-growing and loyal audience, the NFF is a standout on the festival circuit, focused specifically on films that demonstrate the bond between the writer and the film-going audience.
NFF provides an engaging arena for filmmakers, screenwriters, actors, producers, agents, and development executives to network, relax, and enjoy exceptional films in an idyllic setting. NFF boasts unique Signature Programs for guests and audiences alike – Late Night Storytelling, All Star Comedy Roundtable Presented by Ben Stiller, Morning Coffee With…, and In Their Shoes…, as well as staged readings of unproduced screenplays – all culminating in the gala Screenwriters Tribute which each year honors the career of a luminary screenwriter. Last year’s Tributee was Writer/Director/Producer Barry Levinson.
Uniquely filmmaker-focused, the NFF offers all invited feature filmmakers complimentary travel, lodging, and passes to all screenings and events. NFF’s annual Adrienne Shelly Excellence in Filmmaking Award honors the outstanding achievement of a female filmmaker, with each year’s winner receiving a reception in her honor and a $5,000 USD cash prize. The winner of Showtime’s Tony Cox Award Screenplay Competition receives $5,000 cash and a month’s stay in October at the Screenwriters Colony in Nantucket, a launchpad for promising screenwriters. Success stories abound, including 2002 winner Debra Granik, whose new film, WINTER’S BONE, has been nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Colony writers are provided with a workstation, transportation, cleaning, and chef services…all they’re asked to do is write!

MISSION AND OBJECTIVE
The Nantucket Film Festival was founded in 1996 to spotlight screenwriting in today’s cinema. Inspired by the colorful local community of writers and artists on the island of Nantucket, NFF has been dedicated to the notion that the screenwriter’s contribution is at the core of filmmaking.
MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Last year, NFF introduced a Professional Script Analysis service performed by highly qualified and experienced script consultants and available to contest applicants for an additional fee. Recent NFF Screenwriters Colony mentors and advisers have included Patty Jenkins (writer/director, MONSTER), Peter Sollett (writer/director, RAISING VICTOR VARGAS), Campbell Scott (writer/actor/director, ROGER DODGER, Oren Moverman (writer, THE MESSENGER), Jeb Brody (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE), Coleman Hough (writer, FULL FRONTAL and BUBBLE), and Ali Bell of Heyday Films (HARRY POTTER).
Filmmakers and special guests enjoy the low-key atmosphere, and the networking opportunities at NFF. Over the years a veritable who’s who of the film world have attended, mingled with guests, and forged collaborations. Ben Stiller met John Hamburg at NFF and they went on to make ZOOLANDER together; Sophie Barthes pitched COLD SOULS to Paul Giamatti who went on to star in the film; and Lili Taylor, a Tony Cox Screenplay Competition juror, was so impressed with Jenny Deller’s script for FUTURE WEATHER that she agreed to star in the film at the Festival.
