Boy Erased – **1/2 OUT OF 4
Boy Erased is the second film this year dealing with the issue of gay conversion therapy and individuals struggling with same sex attraction. The film released in the spring, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post“ won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2018 in the U.S. Dramatic category, and is the better of the two films.
Directed by Joel Edgerton (“The Gift”) and starring the up-and-coming Lucas Hedges, the film never rises above in style and substance that of a television movie. But the circumstances that the teens must endure are reprehensible and repugnant. The material is poignant but the end result is at best a mediocre film. See it for its truly outstanding acting of Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman and Joel Edgerton.
