An Independent Film Festival Grows In Brooklyn

Written by: FFT Webmaster | June 8th, 2012

In just three short years, the Brooklyn Academy Of Music has established a world-class festival for indie films under the banner of BAMcinemaFest. Now coming into its fourth year later this month, the Festival is hosting the New York premieres of films that have made waves at previous festivals such as Sundance, Cannes, SXSW, Slamdance and others. Among the first films to be announced for this year’s edition, which will run from June 20 to July 1 at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music, are the dramatic features THE COMEDY (Rick Alverson), COMPLIANCE (Craig Zobel),  FOR ELLEN (So Yong Kim), FRANCINE (Brian M. Cassidy & Melanie Shatzky), NOBODY WALKS (Ry Russo-Young), THE UNSPEAKABLE ACT (Dan Sallitt) and WELCOME TO PINE HILL (Keith Miller). A strong documentary lineup is highlighted by the North American premiere of WALK AWAY RENEE, the latest film from cult director Jonathan Caouette, who stunned the festival circuit with his autobiographical pastiche film TARNATION almost a decade ago. In his new film, Caouette returns with his singular blend of home video montage, intimate confessionals, and even a dizzying CGI dream sequence that intimately explores his mother’s 40-year struggle with mental illness and the effect it had on their relationship.
