POSTCARDS FROM THE ZOO, which is screening in the Main Competition section of the Berlin International Film Festival, has been one of the most talked-about titles here. The film, from the single-named Indonesian auteur Edwin, is an either-you-love-it-or-you-hate-it entry that has sold to multiple territories, including Germany and Korea. The film tells the tale of a “wild child” who is raised by zookeepers. The filmmaker employs a kind of magical realism to offer portraits of its actors (both human and animal) at the 250-acre wildlife preserve where the film is set. The film introduces us to some highly cinematic animals, including a giraffe named Jura who becomes one of the movie’s three co-stars. The film is mainly seen through the point of view of a little girl wandering around in search of her father in a rather surreal world where human and mammals are deeply interconnected.
