Top Prize Winner At Cannes Directors Fortnight

Written by: FFT Webmaster | May 29th, 2012

The prestigious Directors Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival, which has introduced myriad film talents over the past two decades, chose the Chilean director Pablo Larrian for his political drama NO as the best film of the section this year. The film, which looks at the dramatic public referendum that ended Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet’s reign of terror, was the first Chilean film so honored. It stars Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal as a crusading ad man who works on the campaign to persuade voters to give the Pinochet regime a no vote. The film received some of the strongest positive reviews at the Festival, so it came as no surprise that American distributor Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American rights to the film, which will be released later this year. Expect this to be a major contender at end of the year awards season and on the shortlist for Oscar consideration.
