Lars Von Trier’s Final Public Statement
Written by: FFT Webmaster | October 7th, 2011
Controversial Danish director Lars von Trier has declared that he will no longer do interviews or release public statements. The decision to keep mum results from a recent police inquiry in Denmark about charges brought against him in France after his now-infamous “I am a Nazi” comments when his latest film MELANCHOLIA made its world premiere at last May’s Cannes Film Festival. The film screened at this week’s New York Film Festival but the camera-shy and notorious travel-phobic von Trier was not in the Big Apple. Via his production company Zentropa, von Trier released what could be his final public statement. “Today I was questioned by (Danish) police in connection with charges made by the prosecution of the city of Grasse in France from August 2011 regarding a possible violation of prohibition in French law against justification of war crimes. The investigation covers comments made during the press conference in Cannes in May 2011. Due to these serious accusations I have realized that I do not possess the skills to express myself unequivocally and I have therefore decided from this day forth to refrain from all public statements and interviews.” Lars, maybe you are better off……let your films do the talking for you.
