Disclosure Day (Steven Spielberg, 2026) 5 out of 5 stars

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) is back and exceeds expectations in his latest science-fiction piece, Disclosure Day. At first glance, I was hesitant to believe that Spielberg could drop yet another sci-fi masterpiece, seeing how saturated his career is in the genre, and how similar the concept seemed to be to the 1977 Close Encounter of the Third Kind. Spielberg has raised the bar high for himself, but nevertheless Disclosure Day approaches the narrative with modern ingenuity, witty screenwriting, and visually stunning moments that make it a timely work of cinema and an instant classic.

Disclosure Day follows the electrifying idea that aliens exist and that a powerful tech company called “Wardex” has been keeping it a secret from the world. But one of the company’s chief cybersecurity technicians, Dr. Daniel Keller (Josh O’Connor, Wake Up Dead Man), knows Wardex’s secrets, and not only plans to expose them but also let the world know of extraterrestrial life … and how we are not alone in the universe. At the same time, a Kansas City news reporter, Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada 2) starts having strange, supernatural abilities. With both of them hunted by Wardex’s owner, Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth, Empire of Light), Daniel and Margaret must find a safe haven, all the while uncovering the key to their purpose in unveiling an earth-shattering truth.

What makes Spielberg’s new film so unique is the way it tackles extremely relevant and timely themes of media influence, big technology companies’ role in society, and the power of information in a modern world. Disclosure Day is a living, breathing conspiracy theory, and its focus on developing unique characters, high stakes, and deeper meaning reflects today’s culture climate. Every scene delivers heartfelt moments, clever and naturally flowing humor, or intense cinematic action sequences, all of which blend to bring a highly adventurous story that grips the viewer from the first shot and never lets go.

Initially, my worries were if Disclosure Day would be able to escape the shadow of Spielberg’s previous films. As previously stated, Spielberg has a high bar to top for his newest film to meet expectations. But Disclosure Day has its own vision, setting, and imagery. It will certainly captivate this year’s audiences and leave them thinking about a very pertinent hot topic: what life is out there in the universe and what are our world leaders not telling us about them? It’s proof that Spielberg still has a few phenomenal ideas still up his sleeve, hopefully for years to come.
