Michael Fassbender’s Shameful New Movie

SHAME, likely to be one of the most buzzed about films of the year, will receive an NC-17 rating when it is released by Fox Searchlight on December 2nd. The film, which stars breakout actor Michael Fassbender as a sex addict, includes full frontal male and female nudity and graphic sex. According to the Motion Picture Association of America, which rates movies, NC-17 films are “patently adult.” Children are not admitted to them — even with their parents. An NC-17 rating affects a movie’s ability to make money for a number of reasons. Among the most important, many theaters won’t show them. The rating also makes it difficult to advertise such movies in many newspapers and magazines. However, the film’s strong Oscar buzz (where it may grab a fistful of nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress—Carey Mulligan—and Best Director—Steve McQueen) could overcome the stricter ratings designation. Fassbender, who has had a busy year with FANTASTIC FOUR and JANE EYRE, has just been named GQ Breakthrough Star of the Year, could very easily take home the Oscar (or at least a Golden Globe) this year.
